Frequently Asked Questions
What is a restraining order?
A restraining order (legally called an "injunction for protection") is a court order that requires someone to stay away from you, your home, your workplace, and your children. In Florida, you can get a restraining order if someone has committed or threatened domestic violence against you.
How much does it cost?
Attorney fees for restraining order cases start at $2,500. The exact fee depends on your specific situation — your attorney will review your case and provide an exact quote before you pay anything. Payment plans may be available.
How does the process work?
Step 1: You fill out our secure intake form with information about
your situation and upload any evidence you have (photos, text messages, police reports, etc.).
Step 2: Your information is organized and prepared for attorney review.
Step 3: Your attorney reviews everything, contacts you with their fee,
and — once you agree — files the petition with the court on your behalf.
Is my information safe?
Yes. Your information is encrypted and stored securely. We never share your details with anyone except your attorney. Our emails use generic subject lines — nothing in your inbox will reveal what this site is for. Every page has a quick-exit button if you need to leave the site immediately.
Do I need to have evidence?
Evidence helps strengthen your case, but it's not required to get started. Your attorney can advise you on what evidence would be most helpful. Common evidence includes photos of injuries, screenshots of threatening text messages, police reports, medical records, and witness statements.
How long does it take?
After you submit your information, your attorney will typically review your case and contact you promptly. Once you agree to move forward, your attorney files the petition with the court. The court may grant a temporary restraining order the same day. A hearing for a permanent order is usually scheduled within 15 days.
What if I can't afford an attorney?
You can file for a restraining order on your own at no cost. The Florida courts provide free forms and self-help resources:
- Florida DV Hotline: 1-800-500-1119 (free, confidential, 24/7)
- Florida Courts self-help center
- Free petition forms (Form 12.980)
Who is my attorney?
Your case is handled by the Schill Law Firm. Attorney Lawrence C. Schill is a licensed Florida attorney (Bar No. 0983561) who handles injunction and family law cases in Northwest Florida.
Does this site use AI?
Yes. We use AI technology to help organize your information and prepare case materials for attorney review. Every document generated by AI is clearly labeled and must be reviewed and approved by your attorney before anything is filed with the court. AI assists your attorney — it does not replace them.
